3/25/14 - Bill Schuetteâs campaign for re-election as Michiganâs Attorney General made its way to Livingston County this morning. Schuette, who describes himself as âMichiganâs Voice for Victimsâ, spoke at Livingston Countyâs Republican offices in Howell on several topics he plans to address during his campaign. Topping the list is his effort to uphold Michiganâs ban on same-sex marriages. On Friday, he filed an emergency motion requesting a stay on a federal judgeâs ruling that same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. That prompted Mark Totten, a Kalamazoo attorney seeking the Democratic nomination for Attorney General, to call Schuetteâs appeal a waste of tax dollars that isnât likely to prevail in the face of a surge of recent rulings legalizing gay marriage. Schuette tells WHMI he believes the appeal is what his job is all about. "I took an oath to defend the (Michigan) Constitution and I'm defending the marriage clause which was adopted by 2.7 million voters," referring to the 2004 voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that defined marriage as exclusively between one man and one woman. Schuette says he included Livingston County on his re-election kickoff tour because he has several connections to the area, having been the first to charge Raulie Casteel, the so-called I-96 shooter, with terrorism. He says he was also proactive in seeking justice for Livingston County residents who were victims of tainted steroid shots that led to fungal meningitis. Schuetteâs campaign will continue in Lansing tomorrow. (DK/JK)
