3/26/14 - Some extra days in the classroom will have to be tacked onto the end of the school year for students in Fowlerville and Brighton thanks to the particularly snowy winter. Fowlerville students have had a total of 10 snow days this winter, and while they may have enjoyed the time off, it will be cutting into their summer vacations. The state only forgives six days every year for snow and cold, meaning four days still have to be made up. The district was originally planning to end the school year with two half-days on June 5th and 6th, but now those days have been moved to June 11th and 12th. Superintendent Wayne Roedel tells WHMI some people think snow days actually save the district money, but in reality they are a drain on revenues and a source of new expenditures. Fowlerville Schools include a daycare program and other paid services that do not get to contribute their expected level of revenue when the district is closed. Additionally, food service revenues are lost without students in the schools, and food stored in the kitchens was lost to spoilage due to being left uneaten for longer than expected. Together with extra snow plowing and maintenance, Roedel says he expects the total cost of the snow days this winter to be about $90,000. Meanwhile in Brighton, two snow days will have to be made up district-wide, and three makeup days will be necessary at Brighton High School. The two makeup days for pre-K-through-12th grade will be this Thursday and Friday, which were originally scheduled as off-days. The third make-up day at the high school will take place on the Monday after spring break, April 21st.
