5/2/14 - A multi vehicle crash shut down both directions of M-59 and sent one local woman to the hospital. Deputies with the Livingston County Sheriffâs Department responded shortly after 3pm to the accident on M-59 near Argentine Road that involved three vehicles. Sheriff Bob Bezotte tells WHMI upon arrival, they learned that a 30-year-old Howell man driving a Ford F-150 was traveling westbound and failed to stop and yield right of way as a white Ford van was making a left turn into a meat factory there. The van was forced over into the eastbound lane and struck a Chevy blazer head-on, which was driven by a 55-year-old Howell woman. Bezotte says the Blazer took a hard hit in the front end and rolled over several times, trapping the woman inside. She had to be extricated by the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority and was transported to the University of Michigan hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Bezotte says the woman was pretty fortunate â crediting seatbelt use and airbag deployment, noting this was a good indication of how seat belts can save lives in high impact crashes. Bezotte says alcohol was not a factor and the at-fault driver of the Ford F-150 was ticketed. The crash and subsequent investigation and clean-up shut down both directions of M-59 between Hughes and Argentine Roads for about half an hour, resulting in significant traffic back-ups. (JM)
