5/5/14 - An Encore Extravaganza Celebration Thursday evening will serve as the final extension of a cause that local students and staff have been working to bring attention to all year long. Project: Find A Cure for FA kicked off at Highlander Way Middle School in Howell last fall, with a goal of raising $3,000. It was started by the school's student run news network, The HAWK News, to raise funds for Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance or FARA. The rare disease affects some 50,000 people worldwide â including a student at Highlander Way, 14-year-old Jack DeWitt (pictured). This Thursday's Encore Extravaganza will feature a co-ed basketball game of staff versus the boys and girls teams, among other entertainment and activities, and will culminate the fundraising campaign. Technology teacher Carole Colburn tells WHMI theyâll tally up everything following Thursdayâs Encore Extravaganza Celebration, which is open to the public, along with all of the funds collected during the campaign and then write one check directly to FARA. Information about the event and campaign is posted below. (JM)
