6/1/14 - Around 30 people took part in the free speech rally at the Mill Pond in Brighton on Saturday. Participants protested what they called an attack upon free speech by holding signs and shouting profanities at anyone within earshot. 19-year-old Collin Andersen is at the center of the controversy. On April 11th Andersen, who was âhanging outâ with friends in the parking next to the Imagination Station playground, was issued a $200 ticket for disorderly conduct after swearing in public. When asked what he would do as a parent subjected to foul language in the park Andersen told WHMI, "Personally Iâd ask them to keep it down or not use that kind of language. If they did not listen, I would just leave. I would not call the cops or get the cops involved because I am offended. Iâd just leave." The rally organized by Libertarian candidate James Weeks II drew mixed reactions from those enjoying a day at the Imagination Station. Kristen Setlack, a mom from Howell, said she knows people swear, but when they come to a park that has children playing, no one wants to hear that. Al Young, of Brighton Township, says thereâs a time, and a place for everything and the family park is no place for profanity. (LR/JK)
