7/16/14 - Hamburg Township residents will get the chance to vote on a new road millage in the November general election. Supervisor Pat Hohl says road quality is the township’s number-one complaint, with citizens citing concerns about unsafe roads, people veering left to avoid road damage, and damage to cars from the roadway. The township formed a focus group of residents about a year ago, and that group eventually came to the conclusion that a millage would be needed to address the township’s decaying roads. The millage that will go before voters in November calls for a 2-mill property tax for five years, followed by a 1-mill tax for another ten years. Only Trustee Mike Dolan voted against the ballot proposal, saying the millage was an extreme measure to address something that was not the township’s responsibility. Other board members said the state is not fulfilling its duties to keep roads in repair, and that voters could reject the offer if they believed it was too extreme. The focus group that recommended the millage will hold two informational meetings on the topic, the first on September 9th and the second on October 23rd, at the Hamburg Township Hall. Dolan also objected to these meetings, saying township facilities should not be used in one-sided political discussions and that the focus group was biased in favor of the millage. (TD)
