7/16/14 - All of the birthday cards and well wishes sent to a local veteran fighting to save his home are expected to be delivered at a later date following some unfortunate news. The Livingston County Department of Veterans Affairs has been leading the cause to help Ross Dahlberg, a disabled Korean War-era veteran who turned 83 today and recently lost his Hamburg Township home in a sheriff sale. He suffers from numerous health problems and is confined to a wheelchair but remains sharp in spirit. Dahlberg was placed in a local rehab facility after a recent surgery procedure but when Veterans Benefits Counselor Josh Parish drove over today to drop off all of the birthday cards that were sent in, he was informed that Dahlberg was back in the hospital and being treated for pneumonia. Parish says he was told by one of the nurses that they were confident they caught the pneumonia before it progressed and that he should be back to the rehab facility in a few days. Parish says he was further informed by staff that Dahlberg wanted everyone to know that he truly appreciates the fact that so many people are thinking about him. Parish plans to hold onto all of the cards and bring them over to Dahlberg once he’s been released from the hospital. Meanwhile the goal to save Dahlberg’s home is to raise $132,000 before the redemption period is up on September 26th. As of today, more than $8,000 had been raised on the Go Fund Me online account set up, but community donations and birthday wishes have also been steadily arriving at the county Department of Veterans Affairs office. Complete information is available through the link below. (JM)
