7/17/14 - It was only a matter of time before the new Latson Road realignment and I-96 interchange started spurring development projects, and it appears one of the first will be a gas station and drive-thru restaurant. A USA2GO gas station and Tim Hortons drive-thru is being proposed on a vacant lot located on the west side of Latson Road, south of Grand River and on the corner of Grand Oaks Drive. The Genoa Township Planning Commission gave the project the green light during its meeting Monday night. The planning commission is recommending that the township board approve two special use permits for the project, which are consistent with standards and township ordinance. The special use permits would be subject to site plan approval and the adoption of an environmental impact assessment, which the commission is also recommending. It was noted that the lighting, while consistent with ordinance at the property line, is beyond intensity under the proposed canopies and gooseneck fixtures. Commissioners stated that if township staff determines the lights have an unacceptable glow after review, then they are to be downgraded. The site plan approval recommendation is also contingent upon the applicant retaining any necessary governmental permits from the MDEQ for underground fuel storage tanks. (JM)
