9/28/14 - With a referendum on whether the Village of Dexter should become a city on the ballot this November, a group of citizens opposed to the change are holding an informational meeting on Tuesday. Pro-village advocates will hold the meeting in the atrium of Dexter United Methodist Church beginning at 7:30pm on September 30th. The Dexter Leader reports it is one of several planned ahead of the November 4th election to promote a ânoâ vote on the city referendum. The group organizing the meeting is led by James Smith, who is running to be part of the village council or city council, depending on whether the referendum passes. He says there is no legitimate reason for becoming a city other than eliminating double-taxation for village residents in Webster Township, who must pay for police and fire protection twice. This portion of the village gave the pro-city movement its momentum during the May 2013 election. (TD)
