9/29/14 - A Livingston County woman who must stick to a gluten-free diet wants to help others with the condition. Dawn Scheu of Gregory was diagnosed with celiac disease four years ago. It is an autoimmune disorder that causes gluten to damage the small intestine and interfere with the absorption of nutrients. She must avoid gluten, a protein found in grains. As a result, she went to Kathryn Watters of Brighton, who trained her German shorthaired pointer Willow to become one of a few service dogs that can detect gluten. Scheu says her condition is so severe she felt trapped in her own home before Willow was trained. Watters and Scheu have since started a business called Nosey Dog-Detection Partners Inc. to train other gluten-detecting dogs. (JK)
