2/5/13 - Next Tuesday marks the filing deadline for anyone qualified and interested in filling an open seat on the Livingston County Board of Commissioners. The District 5 seat that encompasses the entire City of Howell as well as Howell and Cohoctah Townships was vacated by Jay Drick, who left to become the new 53rd District Court magistrate. It will take two special elections to fill the partial 2-year term vacancy, the cost of which will likely be incurred by the County and municipalities of District 5, although funding plans are still being discussed by those affected. A special primary election will be held on May 7th to nominate Republican or Democratic candidates who wish to fill the vacancy. The filing deadline is 4pm on Tuesday, February 12th. Interested candidates must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of District 5, and in compliance with Campaign Finance Act. A special general election will then be held on Tuesday, August 6th in which voters will formally elect one candidate to fill the vacancy. Candidates without political party affiliation or with minor party affiliation seeking the seat need to file by 4pm Thursday, April 18th. In the meantime, Howell attorney and former Commissioner Don Parker has been appointed to the board and was sworn in Tuesday morning, at which time he also filed to run in the primary election on the Republican ticket. Candidate filing packets are available through the Livingston County Clerkâs Office. More information can be found through the link and attachment below. (JM)
