2/6/13 - A local man was rescued by friends Tuesday night after his ATV fell through ice at the Spring Mill Pond in the Island Lake State Recreation Area. The Green Oak Township Fire Department received reports of a man who had gone through the ice at around 8pm. Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Gentry says upon arrival, they found that the man had already been pulled out of the water by two bystander friends on snowmobiles. Gentry says the man was driving a large, motorized off-road vehicle with side-by side seating across the Spring Mill Pond when it fell through. The man was said to be trapped by his seat belt and started to be pulled under by the weight of the ATV but managed to untangle himself before being pulled out of the water by his friends. They all made it to shore safely, and the man was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for cold exposure. Gentry says the DNR was handling removal of the ATV, which was still sunk at the bottom of the pond as of this morning. All three are believed to be Brighton area men who rode into the state park from adjoining areas. (JM)
