2/7/13 - Two Jackson area suspects who police say were caught stealing catalytic converters from an auto scrapyard in the Howell area have been bound over for trial. 32-year-old Jeffrey Kern and 23-year-old Heather Anders were arrested January 28th by officers on patrol near Michaelâs Auto Salvage. Both were bound over to circuit court this week on charges of possessing burglarâs tools and larceny of between $100 and $1000. Kern was also charged as a 4th time habitual offender. They will next appear in court for a pretrial exam on March 1st and have a trial date of March 25th. Police say the pair was arrested at the scrapyard after patrols noticed footprints and other things that looked out of place at approximately 4am Monday, January 28th. Upon further investigation police discovered 13 catalytic converters along Lucy Road that had been stolen off cars within the junkyard. Sheriff Bob Bezotte says that upon entering, they found saws and other tools that were used to cut the catalytic converters as well as two male subjects, including Kern, who was taken into custody. A second male subject got away. Anders, who they say was driving the getaway car, was also taken into custody after being found waiting in a nearby restaurant parking lot at Lucy Road and Grand River. (TD)
