2/7/13 - A public forum last night sought input from parents about redistricting the Howell School District middle schools to balance attendance numbers. Current projections estimate that Highlander Way Middle School will be 23 students over capacity this fall, while Parker Middle School will be more than 200 students below capacity. To address the issue, the district created the Committee to Balance Middle School Enrollment in December. The committee has decided that certain areas in the district should be reassigned from Highlander Way to Parker, and that current middle school students should have the ability to opt out of the change. Last night the committee presented its recommended changes to the districting map and asked parents for feedback and questions. Wilson says some of the ideas they came up with surprised him. These included asking specific subdivisions which were not included in the plan if they wanted to switch middle schools, and offering the opt-out to the younger siblings of current students. The committee will meet today to discuss possible changes to the plan based on the feedback and consider holding additional community discussions. (TD)
