3/4/13 - The annual Empty Bowls dinner that uses art to help fight hunger in the community is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary next week in Pinckney. The community event raises awareness and funds for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Livingston County. Art students work throughout the school year creating ceramic bowls, which guests take home after having a simple meal of soup and bread. Pinckney Community School Superintendent Dan Danosky says that all of the soups and food are donated so that the funds raised through ticket sales go directly to Gleaners. Danosky tells WHMI that the idea was started by art teachers in 1994 and has evolved over the years into a community event that's raised more than $160,000 in that time. Last year's dinner raised nearly $7,500 and is Gleaners biggest local fundraiser. A silent auction and other entertainment are planned at the Empty Bowls dinner, set for Thursday, March 14th from 5-8pm in the Pinckney High School Commons. Tickets are available only at the door. The cost is $5 for students age 5 to 18, $10 for adults or $25 for a family of four. (JK)
