3/6/13 - A new partnership between Michigan State Police and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Alliance is working to better serve at-risk youth. Officials say prevention, education and partnerships are necessary and needed components to improving the quality of life for youth both locally and across the state. Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston County Shari Davis-Schoech tells WHMI the partnership is exciting news and creates a formal partnership to make sure good things happen for kids. Some of the collaboration includes cross training of staff, expediting the screening process for mentors, increasing at-risk youth referrals, improving the delivery of mentoring services to at-risk youth and tracking the outcome measurements. It also aims to raise awareness about an opportunity for youth to attend the Michigan State Police Youth Leadership Academy and increase the number of MSP mentors. MSP Trooper Duane Zook (pictured) has been assigned the Community Service Trooper to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston County, and is currently a Lunch Buddy mentor at a Howell elementary school. Meanwhile, the organization is encouraging last minute registrations for its annual Bowl For Kids Sake fundraiser this weekend. The three day bowl-a-thon at Striking Lanes in Hartland makes up about 65% of their annual budget. Bowl for Kids Sake also features pizza and pop for all of the bowlers and a t-shirt, along with numerous door prizes. You’ll find details through the link below. (JK)
