3/16/13 - A community garage sale this month at Fowlerville High School aims to honor a young boy while also helping raise funds for a scholarship offered to local athletes. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Maison Z. Wilkinson Memorial Fund. The 8-year-old boy was accidentally run over and killed by a garbage truck in 2006. His parents started the soccer scholarship fund at the high school about a year after his death. During the early years of the program they had difficulty raising funds and could only offer a single $500 scholarship to one local athlete. Last year Junior High Teacher Amy Jarvis, part of the nonprofit Friends of Rachel organization and a friend of the Wilkinson family, became involved in the fundraiser by organizing a community-wide garage sale to benefit the scholarship. Last year, organizers raised enough money to award $1,000 scholarships to two students, one male and one female. Items for the sale are donated by members of the community to be offered during the sale along with a baked goods sale, a 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction of items donated by local businesses. Jarvis says any item that could be donated to charity could be donated to the sale. She adds that part of the concept of the sale is not only to honor Maisonâs memory and provide scholarships for local teens, but to provide items for purchase by the community at reasonable prices. Items donated to the event can be dropped off at Nelsonâs Storage on Grand River in Fowlerville on Sunday from 9:30am to 1:00pm, or from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Items and baked goods can also be dropped off at the high school on Friday, March 22nd in preparation for the event. The sale will take place on Saturday, March 23rd. (TD)
