3/17/13 - A class to teach local residents how to spot and report severe weather conditions will be offered in Hamburg Township later this month. Those who take part will be trained in weather spotting and safety so they can accurately observe severe weather and call in reports to the National Weather Service. The class will take place on Wednesday, March 27th at the Hamburg Fire Department training facility on M-36, starting at 7pm and lasting for about ninety minutes. Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rich Pollman says civilian weather spotters are extremely important to the NWS because most of their weather monitoring systems, including radar and satellites, can only monitor what is happening at the cloud level. Weather spotters can keep the service informed about what happens between the clouds and the ground and ensure that weather reports are accurate. Pollman says the warning and action systems in place helped prevent any injuries or deaths from taking place during the class-EF3 tornado that devastated the town of Dexter last year. A tornado drill was conducted by the students and staff of Dexter Middle School Friday to maintain the preparedness that would be needed in the event of another major tornado. Those interested in participating the program should contact the Hamburg Township Fire Department of Livingston County Emergency Management. (TD)
