11/14/13 - It’s that time of year again when the traditional sound of bells ringing out can be heard across Livingston County. The Salvation Army of Livingston County kicked off its annual Red Kettle campaign yesterday afternoon at the Howell Carnegie district library and was joined by community members and area businesses. It’s the Salvation Army’s largest fundraising event of the year and Red Kettles manned by bell ringers will be at a variety of local retailers. The funds raised allow the Corps to continue assisting those in need in the community and it serves more than 10,000 people each year. A fundraising goal of $200,000 has been established this season. Corps Officer & Lieutenant Tim Perkins tells WHMI the funds are put to good use in the community and help assist with rent, food and utilities. The Salvation Army of Livingston County is still looking to hire bell ringers for the duration of the Red Kettle campaign but there are a number of other opportunities to give this holiday season whether it be donating coats and toys or volunteering. In addition to the iconic red kettle, the Army is also embracing new technologies to help support the campaign such as the use of virtual red kettles that individuals, groups and businesses can host online. Complete details can be found through the link below. (JM)
