12/4/13 - A former Fowlerville High School teacher who is now a member of Congress will have one less person trying to replace him in Washington next year; but only if he survives a challenge from within his own party. Jocelyn Benson, the interim dean of the Wayne State University Law School, told faculty Tuesday that her priority is to serve as dean. The Democrat lost the secretary of state election in 2010 to Republican Ruth Johnson. First-term Republican Rep. Kerry Bentivolio of Milford won the 11th District seat last year after five-term incumbent Republican Thad McCotter submitted fraudulent signatures at the filing deadline and was forced to resign. Bentivolio ran for Congress after resigning his job as a Fowlerville High School English teacher following a reprimand for aggressive classroom behavior. Bentivolio, a Tea Party advocate, is facing a primary challenge from foreclosure lawyer and GOP donor David Trott, who represents more traditional elements of the GOP. Counterterrorism expert Bobby McKenzie of Wayne County's Canton Township is running as a Democrat for the 11th Congressional District next year. Bloomfield Hills physician Anil Kumar also has filed to run as a Democrat. (JK)
