12/16/13 - The City of Howell is hoping for some help in applying for grant money to extend a local safety path. City Manager Shea Charles tells WHMI the city council discussed the foot path that extends west of the city at its meeting last week. The sidewalk runs on both sides of Grand River, and the proposed project would extend them to the McDonald's on the south side and VG's on the north side. Engineers estimate that the cost of the project, including engineering, would be about $350,000, so the city is seeking funding assistance. On Monday, the City Council directed staff to approach Howell Township to see if that municipality would be interested in pursuing a joint grant of other funding opportunities to help pay for the project. The two municipalities together might stand a better chance of securing state or federal money for the extension of the path than the city would have on its own. However, it is unknown whether the township would want to participate in the project when it is already is a precarious financial position due to ongoing sewer bond debt. If the township turns the offer down, Charles says the city would have to reexamine its approach to the project. (TD)
