1/3/14 - State law is requiring sex offenders, including those who live in Livingston County, to register in the next two weeks, but it will be the last mass registration for that demographic. Sex offenders have until January 15th to visit a law enforcement agency and verify their address, employment, and other information to make sure records are kept up-to-date. Local offenders can visit any of the local police departments, the Sheriff's Department on Highland Way Road in Howell, or the Michigan State Police Post on Buno Road in Brighton. This kind of registration previously took place at no charge up to four times every year in January, April, July, and October, but after this month that will no longer be the case. MSP Sergeant Mark Thompson tells WHMI beginning in April, offenders will only have to register on their birthdays, but they will also have to pay a $50 fine. Thompson says the new fee will help offset the cost of keeping tabs on the offenders, while having them report only once a year on their birthdays will be more convenient for everyone involved. He says having every offender register in the same window can cause delays, which could eventually force the offenders to take time off work when finding employment is already difficult for them. Thompson says about 20 Livingston County offenders came in to register on Thursday alone. (TD)
