1/7/14 - A significant amount of blowing snow and potential ice buildup is prompting utilities to encourage local customers to keep furnace vents and meters clear. With the large amount of snowfall, Consumers Energy has received numerous calls of no heat from customers, particularly those who live in mobile homes where chimneys are located on top of flat roofs. Manager of Customer Home & Commercial Services Scott Bartholomew says snow has been piling up and blocking the furnace vents, causing pilot lights to go out. Bartholomew says they ask that customers venture outside to check their furnace vents and remove any snow thatâs collected but also make sure that gas and electric meters are protected; and that sidewalks and gate areas are passable for meter readers. He says safe removal of snow and ice around chimneys, intake valves and meters can also help prevent possible carbon monoxide poisoning. The toxic gas is colorless, odorless and tasteless and can be produced when appliances arenât operating or venting properly. Residents should make sure they have working carbon monoxide detectors with fresh batteries and beware of any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can mimic the flu. If any symptoms are experienced, individuals should leave the area immediately and call 911 or their local fire department. Complete safety information can be found in the press release below. (JM)
