1/23/14 - No injuries resulted following a crash involving a car and a train in Howell Township this morning. The crash happened around 11:22am on Marr Road, west of Oak Grove Road at the railroad tracks. Michigan State Police at the Brighton Post report that a green Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by a 52-year-old Howell man failed to stop for the stop sign at the tracks, and collided with a Great Lakes Central train. Howell Fire Marshal Les Rodwell tells WHMI the train was traveling northbound when it struck the driver-side rear of the truck, which went down a small side embankment after impact. The train was unable to stop due to its weight and went further north down the tracks for about a quarter mile. There were no injuries and the driver of the pick-up was alert when the Howell Area Fire Department and EMS arrived on scene. The railroad crossing was subsequently shut down for investigation and Rodwell says the train sustained minor front end damage, but was able to continue after the scene was cleared. He reminds motorists to always stop, look, and listen whenever approaching any railroad crossing and use extra caution when roads are icy and snow covered, especially on rural back-roads. (JM)
