1/31/14 - The land needed for a planned memorial to the families of soldiers and veterans has been purchased. The three-acre parcel known as Veterans Park will be used for the National Monument for Military Families. The memorial, which is described as the first of its kind in the United States, would feature several monuments depicting the stages families go through when sending a loved one to fight in the armed forces. Organizers say it is years away from completion, but when it is finished it will bring significant tourism to the area. Last week, the Pinckney School Board approved a signed purchase agreement for the land, selling it to the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce for $10,000. The chamber will now donate the parcel to the memorial project. Pinckney Superintendent Rick Todd says the school board is proud to be able to help the project by selling the parcel at low cost, but could not justify giving it away when the district is currently running a deficit. He adds that having the land available will be a big boost to the memorial project even before construction begins, since many grant funding opportunities require that the real estate for a project already be purchased.
