3/17/14 - Howell Schools officials are now taking steps to improve the attitudes of students and relations with Grand Blanc after some offensive comments were posted online in the wake of last weekâs regional finals basketball game. Howellâs boys basketball team beat Grand Blanc on Thursday with a score of 54 to 49. However, a few Howell students not affiliated with the team began posting racist comments on the social media site Twitter following the game, focusing on the fact that Howellâs team is made up entirely of white players while Grand Blanc has black players as well. Other students from Howell High reported the inappropriate exchanges to district officials. The district issued a press release today stating that they are responding to the incident by taking corrective action in line with district policy. Over the weekend Principal Jason Schrock met with the students and their families to discuss the problem. Superintendent Ron Wilson says Howell is working together with Grand Blanc to bring together the students from both schools who participated in the exchange and give them an opportunity to make their apologies and learn from the experience. District employees emphasize that the behavior in this incident is not typical of Howell students. Wilson says Howellâs athletic students are all trained on appropriate conduct, and the district is considering expanding that training to the student body as a whole. (TD)
