3/25/14 - A Brighton Township man who police say led them on a high-speed chase in Oakland County will head to trial next week. The trial of 49-year-old William Smith will start on Monday according to Oakland County Circuit Court records. Smith is facing charges of fleeing and eluding as well as driving with a suspended license. The charges were filed following an incident in the early morning hours of August 3rd of last year when Bloomfield Township police say they responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a restaurant parking lot. Officers say the driver appeared to be intoxicated, and that he drove off as soon as they left their vehicle. They say he drove on southbound Telegraph Road, and they followed until they confirmed his license plate near 14 Mile Road, at which point they broke off the pursuit. Smith was arrested nearly three weeks later in Brighton by the Michigan State Police Fugitive Apprehension Team. Smithâs trial was originally set to begin last month, but was delayed by legal motions, including one by his attorney to withdraw from the case. That was denied. (JK)
