3/25/14 - The 2014/2015 fiscal year budget got its first airing at a recent meeting of the Brighton City Council. City Manager Dana Foster says the preliminary budget looks more encouraging than it has in recent years, because property taxes are increasing faster than earlier projected and because of cost-cutting measures employed by the city. Foster tells WHMI the anticipated revenues may even enable the city to pursue a few needed infrastructure projects â such as street upgrades â that have been on the back burner for several years. One revenue-enhancing factor, however, depends on future City Council action. Currently the city collects a user fee for refuse services, and the proposed budget incorporates approval a millage for curbside refuse collection. That's something which is contingent upon a council vote after the budget is adopted in May. However, unlike most other millages, a refuse millage does not require voter approval, since it pre-dates the Headlee Tax Limitation Amendment to the Michigan Constitution. The City Council will hold three workshop sessions this week to review the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year, which starts on July 1st. The public is invited to attend any of the meetings. Theyâll take place tonight, Wednesday and Thursday in the council chambers of city hall at 6:30pm. (JK)
