5/3/14 - Lyon Township voters may be asked to approve a millage for the day-to-day operation of the fire department this year. Officials are considering need for the millage and are expected to discuss it at Monday nightâs meeting of the Lyon Township Board, according to the South Lyon Herald. Township residents will continue paying .454 mills through 2019 to pay for the construction of the townshipâs two fire stations, but there has not been an operating millage for the fire department in recent memory. Those costs are currently paid out of the general fund. The demand for fire service has increased more than 80% in the past decade, with the department responding to 652 calls in 2002 and nearly 1,200 calls in 2013. Officials are still not sure how large a millage they plan to propose, or whether it will go on the August primary ballot or the November general election. The deadline to file for the August election is May 13th. (TD)
