2/7/13 - A study shows Fenton’s Jack R. Winegarden Library is in need of some work and officials will be evaluating the issues identified while also trying to craft a long term plan. The Fenton City Council authorized a feasibility study last fall for the building, which was originally built in 1940 and remodeled in 1986 to be used as the library. The results were presented at a recent work session and identified as much as a $204,000 price tag for all of the immediate improvements that are needed to address outstanding issues. With at least 115,000 people using the library every year, Library Board President Bobbie Sweetman says the need for repairs as well as a larger facility has been evident for some time now. The building is owned by the City, which pays for the associated expenses. However, since the library is operated by the Genesee District Library, county residents can use any library facility without contributing toward costs. She tells WHMI she’s excited the issues are finally being looked at and credited the City Council. Being that it is an older building; Sweetman says the study identified some small safety issues which can be addressed rather quickly, easily and inexpensively. However, there were also a number of larger issues to deal with such as ADA requirements. Sweetman says the Council will be taking a hard look at the building to determine how much investment is needed along with funding issues and options moving forward. (JM)
