3/5/13 - A report from the U.S. Census Bureau says the majority of residents in Livingston County are crossing county lines to get to work - and few are carpooling or using public transportation. The figures released today are based on population estimates between 2006 and 2010. They say about 57 percent of the 85,000 workers who live in Livingston County commute to another county for their job. Nationwide, just 27 percent of workers commute outside the county where they live. The report indicates that of the more than 48,000 Livingston County residents who work elsewhere, 35% are heading to neighboring Oakland County, 24% head south into Washtenaw County, while 22% travel to Wayne County for their jobs. It says just 7.7 percent of the county's workers carpooled in 2011, below the national figure of 9.7 percent. Also, fewer than 1 percent used public transportation aside from taxicabs. (JK)
